Protecting a new car: why wax or coat it right away
A new car's paintwork will never be in better condition than it is now, so it's worth protecting it before ingrained dirt and wash scratches have time to build up. Wax suits a new car just as well as an older one, and a coating gives the longest protection. A protected car is also easier to wash.
Why protect a new car
New paint faces the same strain as old paint: road salt, sand, bird droppings, tree sap and insects. The difference is that right now the surface doesn't yet show any marks from them.
Protection doesn't prevent scratches, but it reduces how many are caused by washing. Because dirt comes off a protected surface more easily, it needs less rubbing. If the protection is only applied later, the surface may already have scratches that wax or a coating won't remove.
When to apply protection
Protect the car as soon as you can, and at the latest before its first winter, when road salt and grit start to wear on the paintwork.
Even a new car has to be washed and cleaned carefully before it is protected, because particles can stick to the surface during transport and storage. A pre-wash and clay treatment are part of every waxing and coating we do. For example, the price of Hard wax includes a hand wash, clay treatment, washing and drying the door frames, and washing the rubber mats.
Wax or coating for a new car
Hard wax protects for 6–8 months, and it suits a new car too. It's a good choice if you want protection before winter and don't want to commit to anything longer just yet. Premium wax is a nanotechnology-based wax that protects for about a year.
If you plan to keep the car for a long time, a coating is a natural choice from the start. Paint coating and Stardust PCS 2 last 18–24 months, and a coated car doesn't need waxing. NanoCeramic Protect – full set coats the glass and the wheels as well as the paint. Its price depends on the size of the car and the condition of the paint, so it is agreed over the phone.
We go into the choice in more detail in our article on wax versus coating, and you will find the prices in our article on what waxing costs.
What protection means for washing
A protected surface repels water. Droplets bead up and run off, and the surface dries faster. Dirt and salt don't stick as well, so they come off in a wash with gentler handling.
Protection doesn't make washing unnecessary, but it does make it easier. It's worth adopting good washing habits from the start: hand washing, a clean wash mitt and a soft drying towel. You will find instructions in our article on caring for a coated car, and they apply to a waxed car too.
